The 20p tread check
Park on the level, turn the wheel so you can reach the front tyres, and push a 20p into the main grooves of each tyre in a few places. Say what you see, and the note to the garage is written for you.
1Pick a tyre
Seen from above, front at the top.
2Front left
Push a 20p into the main groove of the tread. What do you see?

Start with any tyre.
Tap a tyre on the car, then say what the coin shows. The note to the garage writes itself here.
The 20p test is a quick guide, not a measurement. If in doubt, ring and have the tyres looked at properly.
Band hidden
The tread is deeper than the coin's outer band. Looks fine for now: check again in a month.
Band just showing
Getting low. Worth having the tyre looked at before it reaches the limit.
Whole band showing
The tread may be at or below the legal 1.6mm. Get it checked soon.
The legal minimum for car tyres in the UK is 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. Bulges, cuts and cracks need looking at whatever the depth. The 20p test is a quick guide, not a measurement.
MOT due, or a tyre looking tired? Ring Leagrave Road.
Say what the car needs and when you need it back. Open from 7:30 in the morning, so it can go in on your way to work.
Open 7:30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday
